The Importance of Family Dinners

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) which has done studies on the importance of family dinners, and reported extremely positive benefits suggests some items to help make it (mealtime together) happen. First, start the meal by turning off the telephone and television. Be aware that it is crucial that organization and planning go into mealtime. Someone needs to be aware of what’s going on this week with everyone’s schedules. And don’t be spontaneous in menu planning. Plan dinners ahead and buy groceries accordingly (thank goodness for Everything but the Chef!)

Tips for making family mealtime a positive tradition are offered by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA)

The following tips are helpful:

  • Start when children are young
  • Keep conversation positive and make sure all get a chance to speak
  • Establish a routine to start and end each meal (a prayer, light candles, etc.)
  • Encourage children to create menu ideas
  • Encourage children to help in meal preparation

In conclusion, with the whole family - pick several nights during the upcoming week when you will eat together and keep it a priority!
